P6

In this showreel I have chosen to feature some of my strongest work including projects such as Primitive, Dead End Disco Streets and The Chase. I'm highlighting the footage to show off the direction and cinematography. I've tried to highlight specific character and blocking directions alongside a careful use of visuals. I believe this showreel accurately illustrates my talents as both a director and a cinematographer.

In all of the projects in my showreel, I've used a wide range of equipment to achieve the shots and sound I needed. For Primitive I used a Nikon DSLR with a 35mm lens and a 85mm zoom lens for some long lens photography. We also used a Nikon tripod and a rode mic to achieve the stability and sound detail we wanted. For The Chase we took on a more handheld approach to the filmmaking. We used shoulder mounts and handheld photography for the majority of the shots, which were in most cases either close-ups or two-shots.

On both Primitive and the Chase we worked purely with natural light. We did this for Primitive because the natural lighting was so strong that using LED lights would be unnecessary. On The Chase we relied on natural light because it made the film feel more realistic, and we achieved a film like grain because of the high iso on the camera. With the Dead End Disco Streets music video, we utilised our own artificial lighting to keep the subject visible. We did this because we were filming inside a studio therefore no natural lighting was available, it also gave us the opportunity to make the video look more cinematic.

All of these projects were edited on Adobe Premiere Pro. Some of my films such as the chase required little to no creative transitions, as the chase is a simple linear story which all takes place in one environment. Dead End Disco Streets however required far more creative transitions as we needed to make the video appear flashy and exciting throughout. As for camera settings on The Chase we used a very high ISO as we were filming only with natural light at night, but on projects such as Primitive and D.E.D.S. we kept our ISO low as the lighting was fairly harsh already. On all projects we used manual settings on the cameras.

The genre of the featured films vary, D.E.D.S. is a music video drama, which features various characters going through traumatic life events and finding a new lift elsewhere. Primitive is a documentary short that centres around the environment and man's involvement in it, that film is primarily educational and doesn't fall within a particular genre. The Chase is a dramatic thriller centring around a character being chased through the suburbs of Cambridge, in fear for his life.

  2. Several things you need to cover in your commentary as it is not detailed enough:

Technical detail about equipment you used - cameras, grip, lighting etc
Details about techniques - manual setting, camera operation etc
Specific explanations of the range of shots, lighting, movements
Explication of the range of genres and formats

  3. I would also cut the showreel down to 1 minute and take out any shake or out of focus shots

Also it might look better on Vimeo
